The Movie Industry: Hollywood to Nollywood

Film or movie is a product of cultural and social processes. It is usually created out of the experiences of people. Simultaneously, it also affects the experiences and actions of individuals. It plays an active role. Acting and movie production draw from existing body of knowledge; which it sometimes interprets. This body of knowledge may be language, culture or history. Moreover, film presents a social reality which is created interactively through action, characters and its other paraphernalia. Cultural studies and critical pedagogy started in the United States of America. Here, film performs the function of entertainment and education, by reflecting our society in an audio visual and dramaturgical representation. Nestler Sebastian (2006) describes film as “what comes with the potential of making complex issue easily assessable through images as well. Thus, by reflecting the society, movies advertently, and inadvertently, demonstrates the peculiar characteristics of that culture. ...

Structuralism

Structuralism Theory When one focuses on the term structure, what one has in mind is the outlook or appearance of an entity: one can suggest this as the physical properties or features of an entity. Thus, when  a student of language comes across the term structuralism  as a linguistic theory, he or she may take it for the analysis of a text or discourse by focusing on its composition, or  structure. In reality there is a clear boundary between the latter assertion and what structuralism is. Thus, what is structuralism?  Structuralism refers to a set of general principles shared by prominent European linguists of the inter-war period who were all deeply influenced by Ferdinand de Saussure’s Cours de linguistique generale. The father of semiotics, Ferdinand de Saussure helps to serve as a precursor to what we have now as structuralism.  Therefore, one needs to define what semiotics is so as to have a premise to what structuralism is.  Marcel Danesi (2014...

A Literature review on Nigerian Pidgin English

LITERATURE REVIEW AN INTRODUCTION In this aspect of the thesis a review of literatures relevant to the topic is carried out. This includes work of other scholars that contains certain aspect of the topic to provide clarity also to show the stance of different scholars.  It aims at the investigation of how the pidgin variety of the English Language, otherwise known as” brokin” has influenced the teaching and learning of the standard English Language in Nigeria. Having adopted the language as was introduced by the British as the lingua franca for over four decades, one and would have expected a thorough mastery of the language but the reverse is the case. It is quite obvious that the world has turned into a global village with the English language still gaining wide spread of usage, having other peculiar varieties: the Nigerian English, the American variety, the Pidgin English and the British to mention a few; which in themselves have other varieties. Relatively evident, is the fa...
SENTENCE STRUCTURE The English sentence structure is primarily divided into to two components: the subject and the predicate. The subject contains all the words in the sentence before the verb. From the verb to the end of the sentence is known as the predicate. The division of the sentence into subject and predicate is a Traditional Grammar notion. This notion of the traditional grammarians was later refurbished by the modern grammarians into: Noun Phrase and Verb Phrase. Thus, the Noun Phrase (NP) is the equivalent of the subject while the Verb Phrase (VP) serves as an upgraded version of the predicate. To further explicate on the breakdown of the sentence structure, in a linear order. There are: the subject, verb, complement, object and adjunct. Thus, the SVCOA. It is possible for a sentence to have all these components. However, not having all of these components does not make any sentence incomplete or incomprehensive. The SVCOA will b...

Triple Frontier: a review on the character of Tom (Redfly's), played by Ben Affleck.

Redfly's death towards the end of the play was shocking. If one will suggest premonition, he didn't want to accept Pope's offer initially. Perhaps, he says no to the mission as a form of defense mechanism; probably because he doesn't trust a part of him that much anymore. However, that part of him that he has fear over gets the better of him. Being divorced with a not well paying job. He had a lot of bills to pay, which gets him off the grid when he eventually encounters actual bills inside Lorea's walls. Little wonder that little Benny yelled that:  " Tom! I've been working with you for over ten years and you have never missed a hard out!!" Tom though they had things under control until Lorea's family came back from church, as a result, they had to kill the guards and Lorea and stack excess cash with them. Redfly's account has seen too many red. He'd been starved of enough money that when he finally beholds cash, he isn't wil...

Grassroot is politics; Need to build a formidable grassroot support.

I got a few messages yesterday asking for my thoughts on this election debate and the outcome of this coming election. Well, I said our situation as a nation is a sad one, pretty much unfortunate, to say the least... The battle, obviously, is between Buhari and Atiku. They are the two major contenders in this election. As it is, I maintained that it is better to have this Buhari situation for the next four years that to have Atiku for eight years, because he definitely won't spend one term in office. We can't even afford to go back to PDP, that would be worse. Forget all the make up they are doing for Atiku, PDP is still PDP. I was thinking last night if it was possible for all the young candidate to still come together and form one person, but the truth is, this is too close to the election (we have less than a month) and there's not much that they can do. But they have another four years to come together and a present a formidable opposition. That's if they tru...

In Falz Child of the World video, my least loved scene is the part where he wears a three piece (all white) suit. A better option will be if he wears a white Yoruba dress; preferably Agbada, which will portray an Omoluabi  "Yoruba Angel". However, every other part of the video is beautiful. A clear message: "Don't be a victim of your circumstance". It's a social conscience call to rape victims all over the world.. After This is Nigeria, this is another work of Falz that reveals his mission as a musician (BAHDGUY)  with a social conscience .
